13 in 2013, Apollo 17 40th and December is here.

my husband is gonna haaaaaaate me! I signed up to do 13 races in 2013. My justification — I already have 7 that I am either registered for, waiting on registration to open, or anticipating lottery results to get in. I am more than halfway there and with the starters saying they are going to host 4 virtual races, that brings my total to 11 (to me, virtual races, while still races, can be done on training runs). So I need 2 more and I intend to pick up Ragnar Relay DC or run geek run in sept and jingle all the way in dec again next year so I think I can handle this (assuming my body doesn’t start to hate me). But nothing and I mean NOTHING will stop me from my end ultimate goal of Marine Corps Marathon 2013 in October.

I want to run a marathon. Not sure why in the hell I would wanna do this, but I am gonna do it and I am gonna do it well! And I have my sights set on the Marine Corps Marathon. I ran the MCM 10k this past October and it was great! I figure if I am going to be running a little more than half of the distance in training, I might as well go balls to the wall and handle business. Plus, how many people can claim the title “Marathoner”? And over the past year, I have fallen more in love with running than I ever thought I would. I mean sure, in high school I ran to stay in shape for soccer and in college, I ran to get rid of the freshman 15 (good lord it happens to everyone). And I started running 4 years ago to help change my outlook on life, and relieve stress. This past year alone, with a fair amount of help from Michelle, Leah, Sheena and a couple of others, I started really enjoying  running. And hell, I even started to enjoy racing! WHO KNEW?! Mr. Mensh would never have been able to predict that with all of the excuses I gave in high school!

SO I have 6 races prior to MCM 2013 as of right now, my first ever half included and I am really excited! So yea, game plan, injury free and running my first marathon along with 12 other races.

A couple of other administrative things (that I am REALLY proud of!): Apollo 17 has it’s 40th anniversary today and I created the flash feature for it on NASA’s homepage!!! This is really exciting because I have been working really hard on these features and this being one of them, I am just so freakin proud, I have no words.

December is here. Where in the heck did December come from? I feel like at the end of October, time just started to fly by. Thanksgiving came and went and now into December, holiday parties, etc. Channukah starts Sunday, Christmas is soon after and I have a final and my first ever book club meeting in between!

December is going to be busy, but fun! I am really looking forward to my husband’s face when he opens his holiday gift! My mom picked hers out but I know she will appreciate the little surprise she is going to get also. and I still need to get my dad and brother something! I am SO behind!

About 6 days behind!

I am probably about 6 days behind in everything.
6 days ago, I was featured on a Daily Dose of fit —  another summary about my 8k race (the first one in 13 years!) –Thanks to a daily dose of fit for featuring me!

5 days ago, I was supposed to move forward on a couple of side projects. I made some progress and three days ago got stopped again because one plugin is interfering with another, but I am unsure as to which plugin is stopping progress since I didnt originally create the site! frustration sets in.
4 days ago, I drove to balitmore. It was not awesome, but I love my husband and so therefore it wasnt bad.

4 days ago, I was supposed to work on my side projects, instead I delivered some chairs and learned how to play apples to apples.

3 days ago, I was going to do my make up long run but couldnt cause I was goin to get my hair colored and cut and didnt want to wash it beforehand (you arent supposed to) nor did I want to show up with sweaty ass hair — nasty

3 days ago, I was supposed to go to a bday party after the dc united game. I did not. Instead  I went home and watched 5 hours of crap on my laptop until 330…. because im awesome!

2 days ago, I drove to baltimore to pick up my husband

2 days ago, I had every intention to go finish up shopping for costa rica and to go get some yoga in. — FAIL

1 day ago, I got my tempo run in during my soccer game! AH mazing!

0 days ago (aka today) I woke up and got to work at 615am for a Soyuz launch!

I have had some life fails. My code for one of my projects at work isnt working quite the way I want, but I am all over it! The code for one of my projects at home isnt working the way I want it to at all, being blocked by one of the other plugins — very frustrating! I WILL figure it out! I have to since it is for some very nice people!

I have been failing at my training. I have been running Wednesday and Thursday. Shorter runs — 4 miles. happy to be averaging 4 miles in about 44 minutes. but would like to get a couple of longer runs in… I need to get back on schedule so maybe this week and by maybe I mean DEFINITELY.  Also, game plan — rei will be hit some time this weekend to pick up rear bike rack and some kind of pannier so I can start biking to work after running. SWEEEEEEEEET! I will also need to pick up hiking boots for the costa rica trip and my husby still needs a few pairs of pants.

I have just ordered Cards Against Humanity and am stoked! It is a variation of the Apples to Apples Party Box – The Game of Hilarious Comparisons (Family Edition) — Pretty stoked! Super nerd awesome style! Lemme know if any of you wanna play the game with me! OK, back to work.

Race pics, jumbled thoughts, frustrations and some positivity thrown in there somewhere

Well let’s start with the race pics!

Before the race, being crazy

My buddy, Aaron, rocking the geek run!

My friend, Sheena, working hard!

Me, running my ass off. Funny faces in their greatest glory!

Sheena and I finishing strong!

Sheena and I after the race

Overall a good time! Happy I am signed up for approx three more races. Hope to get a ten miler in there in addition to the 10k, half marathon and triathlon!

I have had a ton of random thoughts lately. Everything from I am not where I want to be at the age of almost 30. I am really proud of my latest work. You can view it here. It is a flash piece on the 50th anniversary of Wally Schirra’s Mercury flight. I liked doing it because it is COMPLETELY different from what I have been doing for the past 8 years (since I got out of school). I have been moving towards different for a while, I think.

Totally random and unrelated, kinda awesome, kinda sucky. I have 7 NEW books on my kindle/kindle app on ipad! (awesome) I have no time to read any of them right now (sucky!)…. sad. Hopefully after my midterm, things will die down a little. I am eagerly awaiting the email to tell me whether I made the cut to be an Oiselle ambassador of sorts. I am hoping for the best and we will not discuss the worst. But whatever happens, happens and if not today, then it will all happen for me another day. Anywho. waiting….
I have never had a pumpkin spice latte. I am off to get one now. Fattyness be damned! I ran for a solid 75 minutes in my soccer game last night! hehehe. Catch y’all on the flip side. Sorry for lack of info right now. Waiting for things to firm up.

Happy Friday Y’all!

It’s Friday ya’ll! With a three day weekend coming up, I cannot lie to ya, I am pretty excited! I was a little too emotional/vulnerable with the last post, so we will keep this one light and fluffy.  (side note, havent been that open in the past decade, ever)

I am sad because my friend and coworker Todd is leaving us here at NASA and headed on to bigger and better things.

Hey y’all, meet Todd:

Now wave at Todd and say goodbye w a sad face and some tears and remember the neat stuff you did with him….

Todd and I with Alex Trebek!

Anyway, Todd has been awesome. I am sad to see him go but happy he is moving forward.

I dont really have much else on this beautiful Friday! It gets more and more beautiful as we creep closer to the amazing three day weekend….

I can tell ya one thing for sure. I won’t be doing any labor, come Monday.

magical moments

magical moments often happen when you least expect it. they can come and go in mere seconds and pass you by if you arent paying attention. I am fortunate enough, at this point in my life, to be aware and able to experience such magical moments.

Space shuttle Discovery, mounted atop a NASA 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) is seen from Top of the Town in Arlington, Virginia as it flies near the U.S. Capitol, Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in Washington. Discovery, the first orbiter retired from NASA’s shuttle fleet, completed 39 missions, spent 365 days in space, orbited the Earth 5,830 times, and traveled 148,221,675 miles. NASA will transfer Discovery to the National Air and Space Museum to begin its new mission to commemorate past achievements in space and to educate and inspire future generations of explorers. This is one of many magical moments that we, as DC peeps, got to see this morning. NASA’s Discovery shuttle flew it’s final flight, over the DC metro area today to come to it’s final resting place in Dulles, VA at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space museum; part of the Smithsonian and a national treasure, this piece of history will live out its days in an airplane hanger.  The cool thing about this, is while it may represent the true end of the shuttle program, it represents a much bigger piece to the future of human exploration and space flight…. deep space will be tackled. I am personally rooting for us to go to mars in the Orion capsule. Here’s hoping.

Enough about NASA, my point with this post is broader than just seeing the shuttle piggy backed through DC, although, this post was inspired by the event; this post is about how you can catch magical moments every other minute if you just open your eyes. One of many magical moments to happen in my life, was when my husband moved to the DC area to be with me. The run from the car to me to embrace in a hug. Another magical moment, realizing that my friends from years ago, are still my friends today. My good friends. I realized this a while ago but it really hit home a couple of months back when I was initially interviewing for the job here at NASA and I was only in town for literally a day and a half. They dropped everything to meet up and have dinner with me. I was reminded of this fact when Rachel and I stood in the parking lot last night at our game talking about life for a while and then again when I was gmail chatting with Leah and Earl this morning. Life is magical and I am finally able to see it, soak it in, and enjoy every minute. Between friends, amazing family (husband, folks, brother — side note: my pop is doin great! he is home again and resting up.) and our nation’s capital, I dont think I will ever be devoid of awesomeness.

Look around. Maybe you can see it too.
