Chuck Brown Day, Clinton Portis Retiring(?), a Cray-cray Winter ahead and of course(!) a running update

It’s Chuck Brown’s bday today. The recently deceased father of go-go is being honored in the District today, with the mayor pronouncing today, August 22, to be Chuck Brown today. So you all should be doin what I am doin and listen to some go-go. Whether you like it or not, you should just suck it up and do it because Chuck Brown was a great musician who gave a city THEIR OWN TYPE OF MUSIC!

For Chuck Brown day:

Chuck Brown, Bustin’ Loose (above); Northeast Groovers, The Water (below)

and one more to show how modern go-go can get….

just so y’all know… if you want mas modern go-go… Wale (DC REPPIN’!) is a great reference. In some of his earlier music, he even uses go-go beats in the song that got him popular being Chillin ft Lady GaGa. Also if you need another reference, Doin’ da Butt by E.U. from the 80s is go go too!

A sad day has happened…. Clinton Portis has decided to retire. A lot of people get mean about Portis and talk about how he sucks and is always injured this and that… but before his knee injury that benched him for the rest of the 2010 season and most of the 2011 season…. when he was merely a shell of his former self… He was a good skin, 7 years on the team before being released in 2011. They expect him to appear for a press conference and being a long time skins fan, I plan on looking for updates… as I want to see if Portis appears in character… he was def one of my fave skins players, next to Sean Taylor (#21, RIP) and a couple of others…

So accuweather has reported that we might have a cray-cray winter this winter! I LOVE SNOW! Aldy has never seen snow but Lou-Lou loves it!

YAY! POSSIBLE SNOW! anything to look forward to that is cold, crisp, and YAY!

As for a running update….I am still just over an hour for 5 miles, but hoping to get that down… I am still having some issues with my shins, but fewer… back and knees scream from time to time, but Kundalini yoga helps a lot and so does yin yoga. I have started cycling and plan to register for the triathlon at KSC in May of 2013¬†because working at NASA and running a half marathon are not enough! So, I WILL finish in the standing position even though I havent been in water to swim in several years…. and the longest I have done on a bike was 12+ miles LAST WEEKEND…. Follow me here for training blunders and exploits as well as other idiotic moments.

I am contemplating bright pink compression socks and on a side note, my friends and I who went on the bike ride got caught in a torrential downpour for over 3 miles before stopping under a bridge to wait it out a bit.

I was wearing my Garmin FR 210 and I am hoping that it didnt completely jack it up… I say this because this morning, I went for a run with my live in running buddy Michelle, and my garmin was in front of her Nike Sportsband by 0.2 miles…. normally it is behind it by 0.2 miles, meaning that my Garmin is jacked and giving me an extra 0.4 miles which is no good…. Going to REI this weekend to possibly trade in for 310XT or just new 210… and going to pacers to ask some questions tonight and possibly obtain bright pink leg sleeves. ūüėõ

Thanks for reading! Happy Hump Day!

Mostly a Runner’s post….

So today’s post is mostly a runner’s post. I have been working hard to make sure that I am active 4-5 days a week. I am looking to increase this to 5-6 days a week but I still need to get a couple of things to achieve this. BUT! before we dive into the runner/exercise part of all this, a couple of notes and an explanation for this post, because as you know… I do not normally dedicate my posts to one thing — don’t like the restrictions. Today is special though. Today marks the first time in a decade where my three best friends from high school and I will all be back within a 20 mile radius of each other! We split after high school (them a year before me… yes all three of them), Rach to UVA, Sheena to Tehc, Michelle to NYU and me to Purdue. We went about our business for four years. After college, Rachel moved back to the area as did I, but Sheena stayed at Tech and went on to grad school and a PhD (my friends are kinda smart) and Michelle stayed in NYC — Wouldn’t you?

So here we were going about our business…. I moved away again, then ¬†back and we all started to separate for a while (life events and whatnot), Rachel went back to UVA for grad school. Then something magical happened. Rachel up and got married and we all reconvened at the wedding for the first time since I managed to pull my head out of my ass. A reconnection happened and while it wasn’t nurtured or extremely maintained, that rebirth ensured contact would continue and friendships would be reborn and rekindled. Since Rachel’s wedding, Sheena and Rachel have both completed their respective furthering degrees and I have moved back to the DC area. Michelle remained in NYC. She did quite well for herself — MBA, Project managing and whatnot…. but then this past June, something magical happened. I was gchatting with Michelle and she said she would be in NoVA for one day and one day only. When I asked what for… she said she was interviewing for a job. We had planned to meet up, which was foiled by my idiocy, but I did speak with her on the phone. We spoke again when she told me she accepted the position and would be moving home. I could hardly contain my excitement. annnnnnnd this brings us to TODAY.

TODAY culminates a ten year journey that has brought us full circle. All four of us in the same general vicinity.

The reason today is mostly for runner’s is because Michelle is prepping for the NYC marathon in November. Running is something that the two of us share and occasionally discuss. With Michelle staying with me for the first couple of weeks she is in town, I get to show her my morning river run route, among many other things.

This pic of the Potomac, takin with my iPizzle….

Anywho, so to go along with this pic, I post for you some highlights off my current running playlist.

J-Kwon – Tipsy — the beat is sick. the lyrics…. ehhhh

Michael Jackson – Thriller — Oldie but a goodie, you can never go wrong with a little MJ

Florence and the Machine – Dog Days are Over — Super encouraging. Def enjoy when the shuffle surprises me with this song at the end of my run (going up my final hill)

LMFAO – Sexy and I Know it¬†— Cause I-uh-I, I work out.

Martin Solveig & Dragonette – Hello¬† — This is the song I like to start with because it’s perfect when the sun is just starting to come up.

Flux Pavilion – Cracks — another great morning song for when the sun is coming up and you wanna get your ass in gear.

Flux Pavilion – Gold Dust (remix) — This song has a sick beat, dub step style, and gets me dancing and running at the same time… which basically looks spastic but makes the song AWESOME.

Rage Against the Machine – Renegades of Funk¬†— Because no matter how hard you try, you can’t stop us now. Between the guitar riffs and the rock-rapping, this song gets your ass goin.

Big Pun – Still Not a Playa¬†— sick lyrics, fast, good beat.

Nicki Minaj – I’m the Best¬†— supplies me with¬†illusions¬†of grandeur when I need em most.

Skrillex – My Cinema¬†— one of many skrillex songs (Kyoto, Bangarang, etc) on my playlist, My Cinema reminds me of my husby and a reason that I run.

Hope y’all enjoy! Happy running, happy soccer-ing and happy yoga-ing!

My husby and I plan on doing a dry run for my bike ride to work over the weekend. I am hoping to get the garmin 110 this weekend also and we may look for some couples yoga or somethin. who know what we will find. all I know is that I am looking forward to seeing my buddy tonight!!!!

I was called a magical unicorn today

I was called a magical unicorn today and I cannot lie, it kinda made may already awesome Friday a little better! ¬†I have also decided that I want to be addressed as such from now on. Hence forth, I will only respond to “the Magical Unicorn”…………………………………………………..or Becca……. BAH! ¬†This came about because I was able to get information out of my brother that I guess no one else could? OR! he knows I would continue to ask him and bother him until he told me. POINT LITTLE SISTER!!! BOOM!

I have a couple of things to address, so I am going to try and do it quickly….

I want to preface this first thing by saying that this is a broad statement and this rant has been brewing for approx three months. It is directed at no one in particular (SERIOUSLY, if it was, i would call them out in person to their FACE, cause that is the humane thing to do)…

If you know how to slap up a cms (like wordpress, joomla, drupal, etc) and you can install a premade theme on to the cms, YOU ARE NOT A WEB DESIGNER. YOU ARE NOT A WEB DEVELOPER! You are discounting my entire profession and the time I have worked to build up my shit.

  • Do I use wordpress? um DUH! Because it is easy and convenient.
  • Could I code you a website in PHP/CSS/HTML/Java/JQuery, yes.
  • Could I create a homegrown CMS in PHP that was user friendly with a decent GUI and have it be exactly what is wanted? yes. I have started creating my own CMS actually. Just for the HELL OF IT! THAT IS HOW AWESOME I AM!
  • Now, do I mean this part of the post to call out anyone in particular, no. No, I do not.

Actually, some people I work with in my spare time who want websites built, know how to use wordpress, just not how to design, customize and develop the sites. These people are AWESOME because they openly admit to these facts and actually want to LEARN more about how to design and create the sites. One has even asked to learn more about it, and that is part of the website creation deal we made. It was factored in because I ENCOURAGE IT.

This rant does NOT by any means apply to or discount the people that can code in HTML and use CSS to their advantage and so on….

Now with all of this being said, my final statement… I have seen and heard many a person advertise themselves as developers and designers because they can throw up a premade system and a premade design… it is insulting. STOP.

OK! WHEW! I have been holding that in for about 3 months. Anywho, onto the more fun parts of this post.

We are at FRIDAY, what are you all doing this weekend? Here is a list from scoutmob of stuff to do:¬†¬†— their eat-local-street-bar things looks good! I will be headed into clarendon tonight to watch my soccer team get wild and crazy on a pub crawl of sorts (SOBER WALKER RIGHT HERE!). Then tomorrow night, I will be headed further into old town to try out a new sushi joint and celebrate my brother’s 30th birthday. While we are celebrating slightly late, he is slightly old. SO no worries there. He is awesome though! And he is SO awesome that I overnighted part of his gift just so I could make sure it was perfect and I may or may not procrastinate… worst thing ever, his gf (she’s AWESOME) reminded me like two or three weeks ago. hahaha I suck.

This next bit may or may not interest you…. but I am in love with Pot Belly’s¬†Mediterranean Sandwich. It is good with and without chicken. You can preorder and it has the right amount of salt, spice, and flavor that you really dont need to add anything extra.

Now with that being said, I am starving. I will leave you with a couple of final things.

1) I am going to five guys for lunch, why? because i ran 3 miles this morning at 5:15am.

2) Here is your friday funny (mute if you dont wanna hear the awful freakin song):

3) Here are your friday grooves:

90s throwback 1: Sublime, What I got (reminding you to always be thankful)

90s throwback 2: Toadies, Possum Kingdom

To Prep you for the Weekend: LMFAO, Shots.

Jammin on a Monday

Well well well… so monday, we meet again! I have successfully exploded awesome all over about three rooms today. IT WAS AWESOME! peeps was wipin it off, but that was THEIR MISTAKE, because becca-awesomeness is like gold, rare, heavy, and well… AWESOME!

With that being said, I have been listening to some awesome jams today. Old, inspiring, different, exactly the same… my playlist has consisted of:

Cee Lo – F**k you

Kelly Clarkson – Stronger

Nicki Minaj – Starships

Flux Pavilion – Cracks

Skrillex – Kyoto

Kanye West – All of the Lights

and so on ….can you tell my iPhone has been on Shuffle since I started my day?

There were two songs that I really wanted to share with you guys. If you listen to the lyrics of Maino’s All the Above, they are really freaking inspiring. Reminds me that I can forever continue to push myself because I am destined to be better than my current self. Which is good to know, because while I am awesome, I can still be MORE awesome. MORE dedicated. MORE compassionate. MORE friendly. MORE EVERYTHING.

The other song I want to share with you that made my afternoon ten times better (minus the¬†caffeine, which I am kicking… again), is a song called gold dust originally by dj fresh, but remixed by flux pavilion (who will be at STARSCAPE THIS WEEKEND) Imagine me listening to this song at my desk, with headphones on, head banging, and arms flailing!

This Monday hasnt seemed much like a Monday at all and it is all because I got up and went for a run and handled business from my first step out of bed. FROM STEP 1! BOOM!

bikes, stripes, fruit striped dance party bikes?

so what originally sparked this post and the thoughts of this post was a couple of things. One was the fact that my husby and I are making a conscious effort to get into biking.

The second is that today, I was outside, walking Aldy around and waiting for him to pee in the heat of the afternoon and this awesome jam comes on, ok no lie… it was Be-yon-ce. Ring the alarm. And I just started breakin it down hand movements and rump shaking…. and as I am doing a turn around ring the alarm motion, I see that across the street an older dude wearin cowboy boots and denim vest and shades, sitting on the stoop, was staring at me laughing to himself. And it ¬†ade me realize that while at that moment it was funny, that phrase about dancing like no one is watching and singin like no one is around… yea, it’d be a shorter phrase if you just said stop giving a shit and your life will get a lot better. I get it…. it’s a PR world. Life is what you make it and while many are trying to watch their image because they represent something much bigger whether it be through their job or their family or so on, the ones that don’t care, seem to have a little more fun (openly anyway) and I def see advantages to BOTH life styles.

so today, I gave it more of a shot and proceeded (after dancing) to sing and RAP really loudly. It led to some embarrassing moments but I am learning to push pass those and move forward.

Now to address the first part of this post… biking. I have never been much of a biker. I have had friends that are extreme bikers… some of my coworkers bike to work. Even my boss bikes in to work occasionally. My thoughts, as I rode the metro this morning, were to maybe give biking to work a shot. I spoke with a couple of my coworkers who ride every day. One woman swears it’s her sanity. And she recommended I speak with the head of our photog dept, so I did. He got me set up with the woman who is going to give me a bike key and then also is going to show me where to go with my bike to lock it up and where to go to shower up and such. He is even gonna share his route with me since part of his route is the majority of mine. Anyway, so thoughts? Any other bikers out there that bike to work?

Also, we plan on getting a doggy cruiser/trailer to pull our pug along with my husby and I on bike trips (see below). My dad says I am crazy and couldnt even begin to fathom why I would want to do something like that.

(this is not my pug pictured… when we get him a trailer, I will get up a pic.) anyway gotta start dinner and walk the puggy. tata for now.

A song to get your Monday goin

I am definitely into Daria. If you guys know me, then you know this about me and/or could imagine why. The amazing witticisms and sarcastic awesomeness that is this bad ass cartoon are just two reasons why. In college, I had downloaded the majority of the episodes. I have the full dvd set on my amazon wish list (yea, i am a dork. what’s it to ya?). Anywho, this song is on a couple of the commercial bumpers. I was listening to it when I decided it was def the PERFECT Monday song! Check it out!

Last night was a Monday night. We decided to go to a concert… an hour and a half away, on a Monday night. Although it was not our best thought out plan, it was hands down one of the best performances that I have seen. We went and saw Lady GaGa in concert. It was amazing. She is more than just an artist, but actually a true performer.¬† Therefore making the tired, heavy and aching eyes completely a moot point.¬† I am not gonna lie. I would happily take another near sleepless night to see her in concert again.

The opening act was Semi Precious Weapons. The lead singer definitely made the performance interesting and worth watching.

Gaga took about an hour to come on stage (which was frustrating) but after the first song and seeing what we were going to be getting for two hours straight, it was hard to stay angry.¬† She came out in 2008 just in time to see Madonna off. She is on the same level of extreme as Madonna was in the 80s which was WAY extreme. Madonna dies off (and rightly so… kinda like how the stones need to — not saying both artists are bad, just saying there should be a tour expiration, thas all…. but to each their own) and Lady Gaga pops up. And just wow.

And you know as controversial and provactive as her videos and outfits can be, she is doing a lot of positive stuff, not just for the LGBT community, but also for people in general. She said some pretty inspirational, albeit cheesy, stuff last night as she lived up to her full potential as a role model to the tweens of this world. She said to everyone: “This is for everyone who’s been told they weren’t pretty enough, or smart enough, or skinny enough, or talented enough, or a good enough singer or a good enough songwriter or a good enough dancer… because everyone told me I’d NEVER, EVER be a pop star…” – insert gutteral scream – “… but now I’m here to SET YOU FREE. When you go home, don’t love me more. Love YOURSELF more.”

Anyway. Every bit of a performance that I expected and then some on top of that.  Oh and side note, I wore a fanny pack. It was awesome and I am SOOOOOO bring back the fanny pack! BRINGIN THE PACKS BACK!
